Professor Guy Maddern

RP Jepson Professor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide, Director of Surgery and Director of Research at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Surgical Director of the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures in Surgery (ASERNIP-S)

Professor Guy  Maddern Professor Guy Maddern is the RP Jepson Professor of Surgery at the University of Adelaide, Director of Surgery and Director of Research at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Surgical Director of the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures in Surgery (ASERNIP-S). He is also a member of the Advisory Committee on Medical Devices (ACMD) of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Chairman of the TGA Medical Devices Incident Review Committee (MDIRC), as well as Chairman of the South Australian Department of Health Committee on New Technology Assessment (HTAG). He is Secretary of Health Technology Assessment International (HTAi) and a past Chairman of the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment (INAHTA).

Professor Maddern was trained at the University of Adelaide and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1989. He is a practising hepatobiliary surgeon based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, Australia. He has received in excess of $29,000,000 in research funding, with over 300 publications, and for the last three years has been directing a program to assess the development and delivery of surgical simulation supported by the Australian Federal Government. His research is also focussed on bringing together the development, assessment and introduction of surgical techniques, processes and technologies into clinical practice.

The Hon Jillian Skinner

NSW Minister for Health

The Hon Jillian  Skinner Jillian Skinner is the Deputy New South Wales Liberal Leader, Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research.

She was first elected as the Member for North Shore in February 1994 and has been re-elected at five subsequent elections.

Jillian has more experience in the health field than any other politician in Australia, having first been appointed Shadow Minister for Health in 1995. She has also held the Shadow portfolios of Education and Training, and Youth Affairs and Arts.

Jillian began her career as a journalist in Melbourne. She was the first woman journalist on the Victorian Parliamentary Press Gallery, she has also worked in Adelaide, Sydney and South East Asia and has spent a number of years living in the United States.

She has operated her own editorial, strategic planning and marketing consultancy and has also been actively involved in community issues and organisations for many years.

Prior to her election, Jillian was the Director of the New South Wales Office of Youth Affairs and she has served on a number of bodies such as the New South Wales Women’s Advisory Council and the New South Wales Youth Advisory Council.

Dr Michael Smith

Clinical Director, Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care (ACSQHC)

Dr Michael  Smith A medical practitioner for the past 34 years, Dr Smith has a clinical background as a senior palliative care specialist in tertiary hospital and community based practice in 3 States of Australia.

In 2002, Dr Smith was appointed as the Director of Clinical Operations for Western Sydney and in 2004 was subsequently appointed as Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality for NSW Health.

He currently is the Clinical Director with the Australian Commission for Safety and Quality in Health Care.

Lisa Ramshaw

Director, Communications & Marketing, Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA)

Lisa Ramshaw Lisa Ramshaw is the Director of Communications and Marketing for APHA and manages the communications, marketing and business development areas for the Association. Lisa is an outspoken supporter of social media for hospitals and in the healthcare arena. She believes that all hospitals should have a social media strategy and that in the next few years, social media will become even more important as Australian patients, doctors, medical professionals and begin to understand its potential. Lisa has spent considerable time researching and developing social media strategies for APHA and its campaigns. She was also instrumental in having APHA become the first Australian health care organisation to become a member of the Mayo Clinic’s International Social Media Network.

Prior to joining APHA, she was the Public Relations Manager for Amazon.co.uk, Marketing and Communications Manager for the National Trust in the UK and Communications Manager for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in Australia and the U.S.

Belinda Hughes

Marketing Manager, The Wesley Hospital

Belinda   Hughes Belinda Hughes is the Marketing Manager for The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane and is responsible for brand management, hospital wide marketing programs and working with stakeholder groups to develop their relationships with the Wesley. She has more than 20 year experience in Marketing and is a service marketing specialist with an extensive background in the not for profit sector. Belinda has a Bachelor of Business and a Bachelor of Arts degree and is an Associate Member of the Australian Institute of Marketing. She is also a member of the APHA Marketing and Communications Taskforce.

Tal Williams

Partner, Holman Webb Lawyers

Tal  Williams Tal is a Partner in the Corporate & Commercial Division of Holman Webb lawyers. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1993 and has practiced in both Sydney and Canberra. He is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has occupied board positions in both private and not-for-profit enterprises.

In conjunction with his professional experience in dealing with commercial enterprises, Tal has a keen interest in corporate management both in the private and the not-for-profit sectors. Tal has expertise in, and has acted for, many businesses in relation to their e-com and on line activity – from the creation of internet and e-com based businesses, to drafting of terms and conditions of web use and social media policies, being involved in disputes in relation to “cloud” collapses, dealing with allegations of on line defamation and misleading conduct via websites and blogs, theft of intellectual property, claims by the Copyright Agency Limited and a vast range of IT related hardware, software, licensing, ‘click-wrap’, rollout and database agreements.

Tal has also acted for private hospitals, medical and dental practitioners, retirement villages and aged care facilities, on line (and hard copy) medical publishers and a number of member based medical organisations. His focus in on the corporate and commercial needs of these organisations (including their IT requirements).

Tal is an accredited trainer and has presented on various legal issues for IP Australia, NSW Business Chamber, the Associations Forum, the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Australian Institute of Building, Department of State and Regional Development (as it was then) and was a business expert on Kochie’s Business Builders. He has also been published in the various business, health and fitness and industry papers, journals and magazines.

Martin Fletcher

Chief Executive Officer, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Martin Fletcher Martin Fletcher commenced with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) in December 2009 as the inaugural Chief Executive Officer. With over 10 years experience in patient safety in Australia, the United Kingdom and internationally, he brings strong expertise in public protection and quality improvement to the work of establishing and leading AHPRA in the new National Registration and Accreditation Scheme.

Prior to joining AHPRA, Martin was Chief Executive of the National Patient Safety Agency, the leading National Health Service body for patient safety in England and Wales. In this role, he managed a diverse portfolio including responsibility for a national safety reporting system across the NHS.

Among his previous positions, from 2004 to 2007 Martin worked with the World Health Organisation in Geneva to establish a global programme of work on patient safety. From 2003 -2004, he helped to set up the National Patient Safety Agency, with a particular focus on developing its programme of work in the north of England. From 2000 to 2002, he worked with the Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health care to establish the first national program of work on patient safety in Australia. Prior to this, Martin held various positions in healthcare policy and management including managing primary health care services in Australia.

Martin holds a Master of Management degree in public sector management, an Honours degree in behavioural sciences and an undergraduate degree in social studies.

Nola Cruickshank

Director of Clinical Services, Hollywood Private Hospital

Nola  Cruickshank Nola Cruickshank is the Director of Clinical Services at Hollywood Private Hospital a 657 bed Ramsay Health Care Hospital in Perth Western Australia having commenced this role in 1997.

Prior to that time she held a number of senior nursing positions at Latrobe Regional Hospital in Victoria and Fremantle and Royal Perth Hospitals in Western Australia.

Nola has a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare industry, and of nursing leadership and human resource management. She participates fully in the activities of professional organisations such as Royal College of Nursing Australia and is a member of Advisory Boards at Curtin and Edith Cowan Universities.

Julie Aengari

Registered Nurse, Sydney Adventist Hospital

Julie  Aengari Julie Aengari is currently a Registered Nurse on the Oncology and Palliative ward at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. Originally from the Western Province in the Solomon Islands, she has worked as a nurse educator in the specialty area of midwifery and has been Dean of Nursing Education for two institutions in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. She holds a Masters Degree in Administration and registration as a nurse and midwife in both the Solomons and PNG. She also holds a post grad Diploma in Teaching & Education. She has been a teacher and a nurse for 26 years.

Professor Kathy Eagar

Professor of Health Services Research and Director of the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI),The University of Wollongong Australia.

Professor Kathy  Eagar Professor Kathy Eagar is Professor of Health Services Research and Director of the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) at the University of Wollongong Australia.

Kathy has over thirty years experience in the health and community care systems, during which she had divided her time between being a clinician, a senior manager and a health academic. She has authored over 350 papers on management, quality, outcomes, information systems and funding of the Australia and New Zealand health and community care systems. AHSRI has a team of over 50 researchers covering 19 disciplines and includes seven research centres including the Centre for Health Service Development (CHSD), the Australasian Rehabilitation Outcomes Centre (AROC), the Palliative Care Outcomes Collaboration (PCOC) and the National Casemix and Classification Centre (NCCC).

In 2008 Kathy was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Royal Australasian Collage of Physicians and in 2010 she was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association in recognition of a significant, long-term contribution to the Association as well as to healthcare in Australia.

Allen Morris-Yates

Director of the (Australian) Private Mental Health Alliance’s Centralised Data Management Service

Allen   Morris-Yates Allen, a research psychologist and epidemiologist by training, is the Director of the (Australian) Private Mental Health Alliance’s Centralised Data Management Service. He has been involved in the development of outcomes oriented information infrastructures for mental health services in the both the public and private sectors for over twenty years. Ellie Rosenfeld

Senior Research Officer, PMHA Quality Improvement Project

Ellie Rosenfeld Ellie Rosenfeld is the Senior Research Officer of the PMHA Quality Improvement Project. Ellie has a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Adelaide. Her other research interests are: medical and research ethics, injury and suicide prevention, and Aboriginal health. She worked previously in the South Australian Office of the Public Advocate in a project about involuntary mental health treatment, and in the South Australian Coroner’s Office conducting suicide research for the South Australian Coroner and Department of Health.

Carol Turnbull

Chief Executive Officer, Ramsay Health Care (SA)

Carol   Turnbull Carol Turnbull is the Chief Executive Officer for Ramsay Health Care (SA) Mental Health Services in South Australia which incorporates The Adelaide Clinic, Fullarton Private Hospital and Kahlyn Day Centre.

She is a Registered General Nurse, Registered Mental Health Nurse, CPMgr (Certified Practising Manager – Grad Dip in Management Practices 1996) and is a member of the APHA Psychiatric Committee, the PMHA (Private Mental Health Alliance), the State APHA Committee and is a founding member of the SA branch of the Mental Health Foundation.

Carol is active on many State and National Mental Health Committees through the PMHA and APHA.

Fiona Judd

Director of Women's Mental Health, Royal Women's Hospital

Fiona  Judd Fiona Judd is Director, Centre for Women’s Mental Health at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne and Professorial Fellow in the University of Melbourne, Department of Psychiatry. Here, she has established a clinical and research unit in women’s mental health, with a focus on the perinatal period, menopause and midlife transition.

Fiona has 30 years experience as a clinician and academic in Psychiatry. Her work has focused on anxiety and depression in the context of medical illness and in association with the reproductive stages of pregnancy and menopause. Fiona’s research achievements have been recognised by the award of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) Junior and Senior Research Awards, the Australian Society for Psychiatric Research (ASPR) Research Award, and the RANZCP Rural Research Award. She has published 160 papers in refereed journals and 35 book chapters. She has co-authored two books; one on consultation-liaison psychiatry and the second a psychiatric text for general practitioners.

Richard Bowden

Director, Bupa Australia

Richard  Bowden Richard Bowden has been Managing Director of Bupa Australia for 14 years. He is responsible for ensuring Bupa Australia achieves its strategic ambition of helping members live longer, healthier, happier lives.

He started his career in audit, moved into financial services and has spent most of his career in the private health insurance field. He joined HBA 25 years ago, holding a wide range of executive roles whilst helping HBA evolve and grow throughout changes in both its structure and ownership.

More recently, Richard managed the transition from AXA Asia Pacific ownership to a stand-alone business under the international healthcare company, Bupa.

In 2008, Bupa acquired MBF, and Richard led the integration of the businesses. He has also overseen considerable improvements to healthcare services available to members, with the introduction of Bupa Health Dialog into Australia, and the acquisition of Health Eyewear Pty Limited (Blink Optical) and Peak Fitness Management (Australia) Pty Limited.

Richard is the President of the Australian Health Insurance Association, a Commissioner on the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, on the Foundation Board of Very Special Kids, and a director of a number of other Bupa related companies.

Mark Fitzgibbon

Chief Executive Officer, NIB health funds limited

Mark Fitzgibbon NIB Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Mark Fitzgibbon joined nib in 2002 with a mandate to reposition the company to better meet future challenges. Since 2002 nib has significantly grown faster than the industry and today covers nationwide more than 800,000 people. Annual premium revenue has grown 140% to more than $900 million.

In 2007 nib became the first Australian private health insurer to list on the ASX. Earnings per share have since increased from 5.2 cps in FY08 to 12.4 cps in FY10. Mark has a Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Arts. He is a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is a Director of the Australian Health Insurance Association.

Shaun Larkin

CEO, HCF

Shaun  Larkin Shaun Larkin joined HCF as a General Manager in 1997. After serving in a number of executive roles
(Strategic Development; Benefits Management; Corporate Ventures; and Operations) in December,
2009 he was selected to be the next Managing Director and now leads an organisation with health
care responsibilities for more than 1.4 million Australians, revenues in excess of A$1.7 billion and
over 1,250 staff.

Prior to joining HCF, Shaun was based in Singapore for four years where he led the establishment
of a chain of ambulatory medical centres throughout Asia and the CIS. Before this he worked for
eight years as an executive for Ramsay Health Care in Australia and the United States.

His academic qualifications include a HlthScD, MHSc and MBA.

Peter Fleming

Chief Executive Officer, National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA)

Peter Fleming NEHTA Chief Executive Peter Fleming is tasked to lead the national vision for e-health in Australia.

Under his leadership NEHTA has delivered SNOMED CT, an internationally recognised database of clinical terminology, AMT (Australian Medicines Terminology) and most recently the Healthcare Identifiers Bill which are key foundations to enable e-health nationally.

Mr Fleming is focused on progressing the adoption of e-health standards of national significance through implementation and collaborations in the healthcare sector which will enable the flow of health information.

Prior to joining NEHTA Mr Fleming was with the National Australia Bank. He is also past CIO of the Colonial Group and Mayne Group Limited. He has extensive experience in large scale technology transformation and stakeholder management.

Evan Rawstron

Chief Operating Officer, Macquarie University Hospital

Evan Rawstron Macquarie University Hospital is an integrated digital hospital located on the campus of Macquarie University in Sydney’s north.

As the Hospital’s Chief Operating Officer, Evan is responsible for day to day management of the Hospital’s non-clinical areas and is actively involved in the strategic management of information and technology and the development of the Hospital’s ICT architecture.

Evan’s career spans roles in hospitals, medical regulation, medical training, the public service and tertiary education. He has extensive experience in leading and managing organisations in their start-up phase and a passion for innovation in health care. Following studies in economics, health administration and corporate governance, Evan trained as a health economist, winning the distinguished Brian Abel-Smith Prize from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Terry Moore

CEO, Southern Cross Hospitals Limited

Terry  Moore The (NZPSHA) was established in 2005 to represent the interests of private surgical hospitals’ within New Zealand. Members were previously represented by the New Zealand Private Hospitals Association (NZPHA).

Previously a member of the NZPSHA Executive – Terry was elected President of the Executive in September 2008 – a position which he currently holds.

NZPSHA members provide procedures for approximately 164,000 patients every year representing around 60% of all elective surgery performed in New Zealand.

As Chief Executive Officer of New Zealand’s largest national private surgical hospital group, Terry’s role incorporates the leadership, strategic direction and operational management of Southern Cross’ nine not-for-profit hospitals. He also plays a major role in the management of the numerous joint venture partnerships that complete a growing hospital network.

Prior to his current appointment, Terry’s eight year career with the company has seen him hold several senior positions, including Chief Financial Officer for the Southern Cross Healthcare Group.

From 1988 - 1998, Terry held a variety of influential financial and commercial roles in the Public Healthcare sector.

Mark Page

Chief Executive Officer, Greenslopes Private Hospital

Mark Page Mark Page, is the CEO, of Greenslopes Private Hospital and was appointed to this position in June 2011. Greenslopes Private Hospital is the flagship hospital for the Ramsay Health Care group. Mark commenced with Ramsay Health Care in May 2000 as the Coordinated Care Trial – Project Manager based at John Flynn Private Hospital. Mark has held various commercial manager roles before being appointed CEO Frances Perry House in 2005 where he oversaw the finalisation of plans for the new Frances Perry House as part of Royal Women’s Hospital and the relocation to Royal Women’s Hospital. Prior to his appointment at Greenslopes, Mark was the CEO of Ramsay Cairns since 2007 where he continued to grow the business in Cairns with the development of Far North Queensland’s first Interventional Cardiology service and the development of the Cairns Clinic.

Francis Sullivan

Secretary General, Australian Medical Association

Francis   Sullivan Francis Sullivan is the Secretary General of the Australian Medical Association (AMA), which represents the interests of more than 27,000 doctors from all specialties and locations across Australia.

Since taking the helm at the AMA, Francis has overseen policy strategy and worked to ensure the peak doctors’ body remains one of the most listened-to lobby groups in Australian federal politics.

Francis is committed to equity and justice. He is a passionate public advocate for the health sector in Australia and has developed a high profile in public debate.

He has been highly successful in bringing a social conscience to the political debate on health and aged care issues and is committed to ensuring that Australian doctors’ and patients’ voices are heard and considered in federal parliament.

The AMA is an independent organisation that represents all doctors; salaried, in private practice, general practitioners, specialists, teachers and researchers, and doctors in training.

As the peak health advocacy group in Australia, the AMA exists to advance the professional interests of doctors and the health of the community.

Francis has had a long involvement in health care in Australia.

Before joining the AMA, he spent 14 years as the chief executive officer of Catholic Health Australia (CHA), speaking for 73 private and public hospitals and more than 500 aged care services across Australia.

Prior to that, Francis was senior adviser to the Minister for Health in Western Australia where he was responsible for health financing concerns, notably the Medicare agreement and Commonwealth/state relations. He was also responsible for private health insurance, aged care policy and bioethical issues.

Francis has a masters degree in theology from Loyola University in Chicago, and a bachelors degree in politics from Curtin University in Western Australia.

Early in 2008, the Australian Catholic University awarded him an honorary Doctorate for his work in public health advocacy.

Francis lives in Canberra with his wife Susan and their three children.

The Hon Peter Dutton MP

Shadow Minister for Health, Australian Parliament

The Hon Peter  Dutton MP Peter Dutton has been the Federal Member for the Queensland electorate of Dickson for ten years after taking the seat from Labor’s Cheryl Kernot, the former Democrats leader, in 2001.

He became one of the youngest Federal Ministers since Federation when appointed Minister for Workforce Participation in 2004 at the age of 33. Two years later he was promoted to serve as Minister for Revenue and Assistant Treasurer.

In Opposition he has served as the Shadow Minister for Finance, Competition Policy and Deregulation and currently as Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing.

Previously he was a small business owner and police officer in Queensland. He left the police force after nine years to manage his business interests full time. He has a Degree in Business and is married with three young children.

Dr Mary Foley

Director-General, NSW Health

Dr Mary  Foley Dr Mary Foley took up the position of Director-General, NSW Health on 4 April 2011. NSW Health is Australia’s largest public health system with a budget of more than $16 billion a year and a staff of almost 100,000 people.

Dr Foley brings to NSW Health extensive senior level experience across Australia’s health care sector. She has held leadership roles within state and federal government, the private sector and not-for-profit organisations. She has written extensively on health policy and served as an adviser to the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission.

Prior to joining NSW Health, Dr Foley was National Health Practice Leader for PricewaterhouseCoopers Australia (2008 - 2011), and foundation Chief Executive of St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney (2001 - 2008), leading the merger of public and private hospitals and affiliated medical research institutes.

Dr Foley was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Federal Government for service to Australian society in business leadership. She was also recognised as Business Woman of the Year (NSW) for her achievements in private health care sector.

Dr Foley served on the board of University of Western Sydney (1993 - 2009), was Deputy Chancellor and is an Adjunct Professor with the University’s School of Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Christopher P Rex

President, Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA)
Managing Director & CEO, Ramsay Health Care

Christopher P Rex Mr Chris Rex is Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ramsay Health Care having assumed this role on 1 July 2008 after 13 years as Chief Operating Officer of the Company.

Prior to joining Ramsay Health Care in 1995, Mr Rex worked as a manager in the public health service in the United Kingdom and subsequently moved into the private sector where he worked for BUPA, the UK’s largest Health Insurer. In 1988, he moved to Australia, as General Manager of Macquarie Hospital Services.

Mr Rex is the current President of the Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA) the peak body representing private hospitals in Australia. Until recently he was a Board member of the Schizophrenia Research Institute, a non-profit, National Health and Medical Research Council accredited, independent research institute undertaking world-class studies to understand the causes of schizophrenia. He is also a Director of Sydney Football Club.
